The presumptive Democratic nominee for the US 2020 election, Joe Biden, disagrees with the idea of defunding the police, a demand shouted in the streets of the country in the wake of George Floyds murder by a white police officer.
Biden campaign spokesman Andrew Bates told reporters on Monday that the former vice president opposes the idea despite police brutality and racism going rampant in America today.
"As his criminal justice proposal made clear months ago, Vice President Biden does not believe that police should be defunded," he said.
Bates, however, rushed to say that Biden, " hears and shares the deep grief and frustration of those calling out for change, and is driven to ensure that justice is done and that we put a stop to this terrible pain."
Biden, who is running to prevent President Donald Trump from re-election in November, "supports the urgent need for reform - including funding for public schools, summer programs, and mental health and substance abuse treatment separate from funding for policing - so that officers can focus on the job of policing," according to his campaign manager.
Massive protests triggered by Floyds tragic death have included demonstrators calling for the defunding of police force.
"There are many police departments across the country who are seeking to realize these kinds of changes, but havent had the resources to - and the Trump administration has in fact made obtaining those resources more difficult. This is at the core of Joe Bidens plan to bring transformative change to our criminal justice system," Bates said.
